"Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics."

~ Albert Einstein

The 2015 number 8 SATURN CYCLE will offer a major awakening to humanity. Saturn is the great initiator, the planet of practical reality. Whether this turns out to be a problem or an opportunity will depend on your adaptability and flexibility. And, specifically what personal karma you have due with Lord Saturn, visible from your natal chart and your celestial timing sequence.

2015, a SATURN cycle

Saturn image courtesy of www.sanatansociety.com

Comprised of the number of the Moon (2), the 0 – or great Void – the number of the Sun (1) and the number of Mercury (5). Added together a number eight: the number of Saturn. Saturn in the Vedic tradition is the catalyst between death and rebirth, and represents the highest agency of personal and collective transformation. Subsequently, this cycle will force humanity into the raw recognition that death is the end station for all and everything. Death is inescapable for all life forms, and it is where we are all going, like it or not. All this jumping up and down, searching for eternal happiness, the pursuit of the almighty dollar, crazy greed mongering and intensifying exploitation of global resources, will in the end amount to nothing more than death.

Saturn is the sobriety planet, insisting on utmost self-honesty, humility and practical realism of how it truly is. Relentlessly Saturn is going to offer these lessons, irrespective of culture, religion, social status, age, gender, belief system, that death is the final station for everything and everyone. This is very hard to embrace, and people go through great acrobatics resisting this, day in and day out, pretending otherwise. We are so absorbed in our own self-delusions and ego distractions that we seek any form of entertainment over and above the facts of death.

We are sold endless trance states via the Internet, via pretentious and dishonest communications, by perpetuating relentless consumerism, pursuing financial get-rich schemes, diet crazes, cleverly packaged magical thinking in the form of self-help “laws of attraction” and so on. Behind all this frantic behavior there is a primal fear nobody wants do deal with: the fear of death.

The Saturn cycle will force us to address all fear. Fear of suffering, of existential angst, fear of death.

Supreme

When I say: ‘I am’.
I do not mean a separate entity
with a body as its nucleus.
I mean the totality of being,
the ocean of consciousness,
the entire universe
of all that is and knows.
I have nothing to desire
for I am complete forever.

~ Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Saturn is slow moving which is indicated by its Sanskrit name Shanaischaraya. It is cold, dry and tamasic in nature, and considered a malefic planet of darkness. Because it rules over the dark side of human nature, it forces us into deep self-honesty, the place where we really have an awareness of what is right and wrong, our primal conscience.

Saturn is a planet of confinement, and often brings obstruction such as delay, restraint, illness, and impairments to ones movements as it rules over the legs. In extreme cases it represents imprisonment. It can make us feel isolated, morbid, pessimistic, anxious and lonely, and when we go through a Saturn period, particularly the long lasting ones, it visibly ages us. Saturn rules over the nails, hair, teeth, bones and skeleton. In this 2015 Saturn cycle we can expect to confront our self-limitations, having to deal with unpredictable elements arising from within and without, disturbing our cherished dreams. We are forced to work hard in whatever capacity, serve our elders as our healthcare systems are crumbling, and will be challenged by the dilemmas of the poor and downtrodden. This year is likely to be without much fun or humor. Considering last year’s KETU cycle (acting like Mars), where everybody was triggered and angry, this 2015 SATURN cycle could have everybody fearful, feeling restricted and outright depressed.

Globalization is a predominant story of our times. The way we live, the way we think, and everything we consume is connected, and affected by this force. This global interconnectedness and interdependency we are experiencing bring with it added complexities. Forces of globalization, while bringing modernity to developing countries, also ignite political and economic instability. Now every local crisis becomes a global crisis, from downed airplanes, public health concerns like Ebola, financial meltdowns, separatist and religious movements, among others.

Saturn is a rebel at heart, so societies at large will push for more social uprising and will want to revolutionize existing law and order. This could be a year full of global struggle, worldwide spiritual discontent, and alarming climate crisis resulting in economic uncertainty. Unless by now you meditate daily, eat sensibly and sustainably, exercise consistently and have a devoted attitude of faith and surrender, you could easily give into the collective gloominess, forgetting how to smile as you lose sight of the samsaric leela we are all engaged in. This is the play of the gods after all.

The difference between what you were yesterday and what you will be tomorrow is what you do today. PERSONAL INTEGRITY IS EVERYTHING in this new SATURN cycle!

The task seems hopeless until suddenly
all becomes clear and simple and
so wonderfully easy.
But, as long as you are interested in
your present way of living,
you will shirk from
the final leap into the unknown.

~ Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Saturn teaches us perseverance as we weather the many storms and losses of life. Saturn is considered a cruel, malefic planet. Saturn possesses unsurpassed resilience and has a vengeful streak. Saturn is the laborer and servant in the celestial pantheon. Saturn represents one’s ability to do what they have to do, even though they may have no desire to do it. In our everyday even while striving for a great task, there are many tedious, boring and routine things that must be done. Saturn gives us the tenacity to do these things. Life is a process of moving forward, even if one is at the bottom of the ladder.

UPAYAS

Worshiping Lord Saturn in the form of remedial remedies for spiritual upliftment

  • Construct and worship a traditional Saturn planetary Yantra
  • Fast on Saturdays, abstaining from all food and drink
  • Wear black or dark blue clothing
  • Feed black crows in nature
  • Chant mantras to Saturn as given below
  • Offer rice with black sesame seeds as prasadam after worship
  • Light a sesame oil lamp with the intention to appease Lord Saturn
  • Perform Navagraha Abishekham, Archana and Navagraha Homa
  • If you are near a temple, do Navagraha Pradakshinam (circumambulating)
  • Help elderly people, especially leg impaired invalids
  • Read “The Greatness of Saturn” (Shani Mahatmyam)
  • Help the poor, infirm and needy without expectation of reward
  • Donate something of value to an appropriate cause or charity

Saturn moves slowly and has particularly strong periods of disharmony, such as the dreaded 7.5 years of Sade Sati. Its through this period, due to the suffering given by Saturn in the phenomenal world, that one turns towards God and grows spiritually because so much hardship has to be endured.

Worshipping Lord Hanuman and Kala Bhairava is advocated during Saturnine transits and their grief inducing sobriety. Lord Hanuman is said to have captured Saturn at one time, and extracted a promise from him that he (Saturn) will not harm any of Hanuman’s devotees. Chanting the Hanuman Chalisa will alleviate Saturn’s harmful vibrations. Lord Hanuman also represents Lord Shiva, and His consort Shakti, and worshipping him (Hanuman) is worshipping the unity and harmony of Shiva-Shakti. Similarly, we worship Kala Bhairava, since this is the aspect of the divine that controls time.

We should not excessively worry about the planets as what we are experiencing in this lifetime is due to our past karmas and on-going unconscious actions. No pain, no gain. We must serve the divine and take a more genuine approach towards our evolution by overcoming our ignorance and selfishness preventing our spiritual progress.

These mantras are very pleasing to Saturn. They need to be pronounced correctly in Sanskrit, and should be received from a learned person who has authority to transmit them in order to be effective.

RETROGRADES for 2015

A planet going retrograde in motion, as seen from the Earth, represents an area of life that comes into magnified focus. The part of the sky where a planet retrogrades, can tell what themes will become prominent during the retrograde phase. In retrograde motion a planet will be revisiting and re-evaluating, until finally is comes to a stationary position for a few days and resumes normal forward movement, bringing to completion and integration the lessons and insights of that period.

In Vedic astrology, the Sign, nakshatra, and any conjunctions happening during the retrograde phase of a given planet, provide clues to the themes that will be important during that period.

In 2015, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn will have retrograde periods. Mars will not retrograde in 2015.

MERCURY

Mercury will retrograde three times in 2015: January/February, May/June and September.

Notable points for the Mercury retrograde:

  • Mercury will retrograde in Earth signs (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo)
  • Mercury will retrograde most of the time in Moon ruled nakshatras (Shravana, Rohini, Hasta)
  • Moon is prominent on the first two retrogrades January/February and May/June - as Mercury and Moon are conjunct on the day the retrograde starts (Shravana, Rohini)
  • Rahu is prominent in the final Mercury retrograde in September - as Mercury and Rahu are conjunct for the final 4-5 days.

Dates for Mercury retrograde:

  • 21-Jan to 11-Feb, Capricorn (23deg to 7 deg)
    • In Shravana, 21-Jan to 4-Feb
    • In Uttara Shada, 5-11 Feb
  • 18-May to 11-June, Taurus (19deg to 10deg)
    • In Rohini, 18-May to 11-June
    • Sun and Marsmake a conjunction in Taurus on 13-June, just two days after the Mercury retrograde ends. This will provide a big impulse to all things as Mercury gets going forward again!
  • 17-Sep to 9-Oct, Virgo (22deg to 7deg)
    • In Hasta, 17-Sep to 2-Oct
    • in Uttara Phalguni, 3-9 Oct

VENUS

25-Jul to 6-Sep, Leo (6deg) to Cancer (20deg)
  • There will be two phases of the Venus retrograde, one in Leo and another in Cancer. The Leo part should be auspicious, while the Cancer part will be more challenging.
  • Crossing backwards from Leo into Cancer, Venus cross the Gandanta point, the Fire-Water connection in reverse motion, from 11-14 Aug. This 3 days period will require attention to matters ruled by Venus.

JUPITER

  • 8-Dec to 8-Apr, Cancer (29deg to 18deg)
  • Jupiter will be in Ashlesha nakshatra all the time

SATURN

14-Mar to 1-Aug, Scorpio (10deg to 4deg)
  • Saturn will be in Anuradha nakshatra all the time
  • No other planets in Scorpio during this whole time
  • Saturn will be able to do its retrograde work unaffected by other energies

What can we expect from the RETROGRADE periods in 2015?

  • Mercury will be about Earth Signs and Moon nakshatras, our sense of security and our emotional realm.
  • Venus will be treat or trick: treat during Leo/Magha in July to mid-August, and trick during Cancer/Ashlesha in late July to early September.
  • Jupiter will continue to illuminate the undercurrents of Ashlesha ways. Being in its Exaltation sign, the light that Jupiter provides will allow us to recognize the points where we could improve in our behavior and mental attitude, and bring that to positive fruition.
  • Saturn will be in Anuradha, a nakshatra it rules. This could be potentially good, if we stay true and aligned with the Anuradha themes of devotion (Radha) and friendship (Mitra).

ECLIPSES in 2015

The two eclipse cycles in 2015 will be in March/April and September. Each cycle has a solar and lunar eclipse.

The eclipses mostly occur aligned with the Pisces-Virgo axis, where the nodes are transiting. The only exception is the Partial Solar Eclipse of September 13th (in Leo).

Eclipses are times of powerful psychological transformation, where the planets representing the soul (Sun) and the mind (Moon), the two luminaries, have their light briefly obscured. The dimming of the light outside, invites for exploring the source of the light within us.

This year eclipses happen twice in Uttara Bhadrapada nakshatra (March 20th solar eclipse, September 28th lunar eclipse) in Pisces. Uttara Bhadrapada is a Saturn ruled nakshatra, and represents wisdom. Particularly the wisdom we derive from having experienced life. Hasta (April 4th lunar eclipse) is a practical, lighthearted nakshatra. The Pisces-Virgo axis provides the possibility of integrating the wisdom we have learned, and the insights we have gained into practical actions in the world.

The September 13th partial solar eclipse in Leo happens in Purva Phalguni nakshatra. Here there is energy of self-expression, and the positive influence of Jupiter transiting Leo at the same time.

Men come and they go and they trot and they dance, and never a word about death. All well and good. Yet when death does come—to them, their wives, their children, their friends—catching them unawares and unprepared, then what storms of passion overwhelm them, what cries, what fury, what despair! To begin depriving death of its greatest advantage over us, let us adopt a way clean contrary to that common one; let us deprive death of its strangeness, let us frequent it, let us get used to it; let us have nothing more often in mind than death. We do not know where death awaits us: so let us wait for it everywhere.

To practice death is to practice freedom. A man who has learned how to die has unlearned how to be a slave.
